Welcome to Ozaukee Elementary School

Ozaukee Elementary serves 315 students in grades 4K - grade 4.  We offer a full-day 5 year-old kindergarten, a half-day 4 year-old kindergarten, and an early childhood program for preschoolers with special needs.  We provide many support services, including remedial reading and math, guidance groups, and a full range of special education.  Certified teachers teach art, music, physical education, and library media.  Small class sizes allow teachers to know their students' learning styles and interests.  They are able to tailor instruction to meet student needs.

The staff members at Ozaukee Elementary strive to provide a balance of academic rigor and a nurturing environment in which children are provided opportunities to excel while preparing them to become responsible citizens.

A strong emphasis is placed on reading, writing and mathematics.Balanced literacy is used to teach students how to read and write.  Small group reading instruction is provided using instructional materials that are matched with a student's reading ability.  Students move through leveled materials at their personal pace as they acquire reading skills and fluency.  Writing is taught through writer’s workshop process and 6 Trait Writing.  Word study (spelling, phonics, decoding) is also addressed.  Mathematics instruction includes a blend of computational and application skills.

Student progress in grades 5K-4 is reported through a standards based report card.  Grade level teams have created grading rubrics that align with district and state learning standards.  Student skill levels are rated as advanced, proficient, basic or minimal.  These ratings reflect what students can do at the end of each trimester.  Student effort is marked separately under each subject area.  We believe parents are more informed of their child’s individual progress and how they compare to established grade level expectations using this reporting format.

This year, technology has become more accessible to elementary students.A new network, updated work stations in our labs and classrooms, Smart Boards, and new software provides additional opportunities for learning.Students in grades 3 & 4 also have access to the Scholastic Read About Program which builds reading & vocabulary skills in non-fiction material. This program allows students to move at their own pace providing extra challenges for stronger readers and support for developing readers.
